Mental Health Europe Project
Across Europe, millions of people quietly care for a partner, parent, child or friend who can no longer manage alone. According to Eurocarers, these unpaid family carers provide around 80% of all home care on the continent — usually without training, without respite, and without being counted anywhere.
EUROPAIDANTS brought three organisations from three countries together to stop working in isolation. Over the project we compared Belgian, French and Greek carer legislation against the EU work–life balance directive, visited local services in each country, and published a practical guide of nine good practices — three per country, in both rural and urban settings — that other organisations can copy.
My role
What I carry from that work into the therapy room is concrete: carer burnout, boundaries inside a family, and the slow way that looking after someone you love can wear down your own health and sense of self.
↗ Follow the TRUST projectدنبالکردن پروژه TRUST
TRUST stands for Trauma, Refugees, Ukraine, Solidarity, Therapy. It is a six-country Erasmus+ partnership, coordinated by a psychiatric hospital in Namur, that uses art therapy to support people carrying the psychological weight of the war in Ukraine — survivors, displaced families, and the professionals working alongside them.
When words fail — and after war they often do — drawing, painting, movement and music give people a way to put an experience outside themselves and look at it. That is the premise the project works from. Alongside direct therapeutic work, the partnership builds training for mental health professionals, educators and artists, and produces open educational resources: an e-book, an online course, and public art events that let Ukrainian participants show their work rather than be spoken about.
One example of how that works in practice: a three-day eco-art therapy workshop by the sea in Greece. Participants built a sense of safety by working with natural materials — sea, stones, sand, flowers — through meditative exercises, creative writing and collective mandalas, and the three days closed with an interactive performance combining video, poetry and movement, which the audience was invited to complete.
My role
Trauma does not stay in the country it happened in. Much of what this work taught me about displacement, silence and the slow work of feeling safe again applies directly to Iranians living far from home.
In February 2025 I joined partners from Finland, Spain, Belgium, Croatia and Greece for a learning activity at the University Psychiatric Hospital Vrapče in Zagreb — Croatia's oldest psychiatric institution. The subject was the relationship between mental health professionals and the people they treat, and how to make it less of a hierarchy.
The framework they work from is called the Helm of Recovery. It treats recovery as more than symptom reduction: housing, money, work and a place back in society are counted as clinical concerns, not as someone else's problem to solve afterwards.
Two examples stayed with me. One clinic noticed that after treatment some of their male patients wanted to start dating — so the clinic helped with social skills, with dressing, with how to talk about a mental health history inside an intimate relationship. In another case, a woman ready to live on her own was supported into a job and a flat, so that independence was something she could actually hold on to.
The lesson I took home was simpler than the framework: don't label people. Sit with someone as a person, not as a diagnosis.
That is not a slogan for me. It is how sessions actually run: the person in front of me has a life, a job or the lack of one, a family, a visa, a language they dream in. Symptoms are part of that picture, never the whole of it.
Most parents who come to therapy about a teenager don't need a lecture on communication. They know the conversation isn't working. What they're missing is a way in — some door into their child's world that doesn't start with a question the child will refuse to answer.
EUF built exactly that: a card game. Parents and children play, and the cards do the asking — so the adult gets to step inside the world of a child or an adolescent instead of standing outside it asking questions. Playing lowers the stakes; nobody is being interrogated, so more gets said. Alongside the game the project produced a digital guide for families and a gallery of real communication stories collected from parents across the three countries.
I presented this work at the project's final event in Athens in March 2025. The tools are non-formal by design — meant for families with fewer resources, not only for those who can afford weekly sessions — and the card game is something I still bring into family work.
Therapy asks you to sit with a stranger and say difficult things out loud. It's fair to want to know who that stranger is first — so here are a few ordinary moments from the years spent between Italy, Belgium and Greece.
